What is a Dental Implant?

Many suffer from tooth loss due to various reasons like tooth decay, gingivitis or injury. Since years bridges and dentures were used as a temporary solution, but now permanent dental implants are used. These implants are fixed into the jawbone directly by a dental surgery which later gets fused, forming a strong foundation, on which permanent or removable teeth are placed. The dental implants are made up of titanium, which is a wonderful biocompatible element that integrates with the bone. The body doesn’t recognize it as a foreign object. It helps in completing the structure of the jawbone. The success rate for dental implants is close to 96-99%. The procedure or the implants were invented by Per-Ingvar Brånemark, an orthopaedic surgeon from Sweden, who was known as the father of the modern dental implant.

The benefits of the dental implants are:

  • Improved appearance and speech
  • Improved oral health
  • It eliminates the discomfort of removable dentures
  • Easy in chewing and eating food
  • Much better confidence and self-esteem
  • Dental implants are durable
  • Very convenient and no need of denture removal

Different Types Of Dental Implants

1. Endosteal implants: These implants are placed in the bone (jawbone). The shape is like small screws, plates or cylinders.

2. Subperiosteal implants: These implants are fixed under the gum on or above the jawbone.

3. Replacement of a Single tooth: Only one implant and a crown is used to replace a tooth.

4. Replacement of Several teeth: The implant-supported bridges are used to replace several teeth.

5. Replacement of all teeth: An implant-supported full bridge or full denture is used to replace all the teeth.

6. Sinus Augmentation: When the bone is insufficient in quantity and quality, then the sinus floor is raised and the bone is developed for the placement of dental implants.

7. Ridge Modification: If there is inadequate bone due to a deformity in the upper or lower jaw, Ridge Modification improves the visual aspect and heightens the chances for successful implants.

All on 4 dental implants

Quite a popular procedure which is also known as ‘smile in a day procedure’. It involves the replacement of the teeth on the upper or the lower jaw with just 4 dental implants. It is possible to replace teeth in a day. Few of its benefits are no need of bone graft, extraction and replacement on the same day and is an affordable procedure.

Dental Implant Process

  1. The Dental surgeon first examines the mouth site with X-rays and CT scans. Quality and quantity of the jawbone are assessed in determining the requirement of more bone. After the assessment, the surgeon will recommend dental Implant surgery to the patient. Under a local anesthesia, damaged teeth or a tooth is extracted.
  2. An alveolar bone graft from a cadaver or a synthetic bone is placed for forming a solid foundation. This procedure takes 2-6 months to heal. For the site which has no tooth, but insufficient jawbone, requires a different bone graft which is placed on the upper side of the existing jawbone. It requires 6 or more months to heal. In some cases where there is enough jawbone, then a damaged tooth can be removed and replaced in the same appointment.
  3. An implant made of titanium, which is cylindrical or tapered is placed into the jawbone.
  4. Once that is healed, the implant will be fused with the natural jawbone to form a long-lasting foundation for the replacement teeth. This may take weeks or months to heal.
  5. Once the jawbone and implant bond, an abutment is placed on the upper portion of the dental implant. It acts as a connector between the implant and the replacement tooth/teeth.
  6. A tooth, or impart supported bridge, or the denture containing multiple teeth is attached to the abutment.
